For Bones 02:03
I remember you told me you didn’t want to be seen As a boy or a girl or really anything You said my heart and my body will never agree And that you didn’t care because you’d never be seen It broke my heart because I felt the same If it were up to them things would never change I remember you sitting on my bed as I cried And you told me you see me and you didn’t lie You gave me a name and told me to try Look in the mirror then look in my eyes Now won’t you tell me what you see What do you know I see the same thing When your sister spoke at your funeral she said “they didn’t want to be seen As a boy or a girl or really really anything” As your mother told me “they really loved you” I thought is this what it takes To finally be seen As a boy or a girl or really anything.

Bad Jackets 02:33
Can you tell your boss from a celebrity? Heaven from hell? Comrad from enemy? Open up your ears Clean out your eyes It’ll end in tears If we don’t organize It’s a core brand proposition From a goddamn broken system If you don’t stand for anything you’ll fall Anything at all Bad jackets Collaborators Kiss asses Fucking traitors It’s a core brand proposition From a goddamn broke system If you don’t stand for anything you’ll fall Anything at all They say the truth is stranger than fiction But it’s a difference without distinction They can beat us up and throw us into unmarked vans And you think I give a fuck about the law of the land?

about

Bones Jones was my songwriting partner for many years, and one of my closest friends. They were also non-binary/agender. Bones never presented any differently after coming out, but they knew who they were and that’s all that mattered to them. Over our many years of being out to our friends, people rarely used their correct pronouns. I watched as people who claimed to be allies refused to respect their pronouns. Then came Bones’ funeral, and everyone magically learned to use the correct pronouns for them.

41% of non-binary people have made a suicide attempt, myself included. Many lives have been lost to a society that doesn’t treat gender non-conforming people with kindness and respect. That is why we are releasing this single and donating all proceeds to Side By Side Richmond, an organization for LGBTQ+ youth in Virginia.

You’re never alone. Your gender belongs to you and no one else. You are valid and loved. You are seen.

With love,
The Alex Jonestown Massacre.

about

Alex Jonestown Massacre Richmond, Virginia

The Alex Jonestown Massacre have been a band since America became great. Their self-described "angry songs you can dance to" are a mix of catchy hooks and knowing nods to their forebears both musical and political. AJM released their first EP of Clash-inspired pop-punk, What We Do Is Stupid, in April of 2018. Their debut LP, Fear of a Flat Planet is out now on Hail Peyton Records. ... more
